Candy and I saw this interesting thing while on our walk today where a tree is trying to envelope an iron wheel.

We navigated another way to to get to the overlook, going part of the way using old woods roads instead of the marked trails. That was a triumph. Here's a couple pictures taken at the overlook - of things you have seen before but now it is a new season... )

It was good to get out today.

In the alternate reality - the one that I had been planning since December of last year (but it got accidentally erased) - I would be arriving in Florida right about this moment, walking up to my sister, brother-in-law and niece and giving them a big hug. The best-laid plans of mice and men.

The steep path we climbed.

As usual Candy and I did our Monday hike today. We wanted to make the loop by climbing the Kennerdell hill first rather than going down it at the end of the hike. By the end of a 5 mile hike my legs are rubbery and it's hard to control them when going down. So we planned this so that the final stretch would be on flat ground by the river to make it easier on ourselves. More HERE )

I was hoping my heel spur would be getting better by now but it isn't. Though I haven't been doing my stretching exercises at all - got bored with them. It was getting better (I thought) when I was doing them. Today it was pretty painful on the return of the hike. I guess I need to get with the program again.

This afternoon Dave and I took the taxes to our tax lady in Titusville - one more thing that needed done completed. Ate at Perkins - one of my favorite places to eat now. I had shrimp, mushrooms and tomatoes over noodles in a white sauce.

Snow patterns.

It was a big hike (almost 6 miles) and we were very tired and sore footed afterwards - down a huge (to me) mountainside and then back up again - but it was very worth it - beautiful snow falling with some sun breaking through now and then. I used the pin hole setting on the camera again. Many, many photos HERE )

Afterwards on the way home we had a late lunch at Taylor's Pub. Hot coffee, fish sandwich without the bun and french fries. The waiter was someone that Candy's sons had grown up with - it was nice to hear how much he liked their family.

A mossy, lumpy rock - probably a fragment from an old foundation.

Even though it has been raining most the time lately the weather favored Jan and me with dryness and even a little sun while we hiked around McKeever Environmental Center today. We decided to take the "pioneer" trail - something neither one of us had been on for a very long time - it's not very well marked and you feel like a pioneer a lot of the time. They haven't bothered to clear it of fallen branches and trees so it is turning back into random woods, and it is marked in dark blue paint - another thing that makes it hard to find. More HERE )

Candy and I did walk today. It was only sprinkling on the way out and on the way back the drizzle felt good as I was getting overheated climbing back up the hill from seeing the Bullion Furnace. This is in the Clear Creek State Forest Kennerdell Tract a couple miles from the Kennerdell Lookout that we have been to many times before.

Approaching the falls - the Bruno Fine Jewelry store in the background. I guess they built there just so they could offer customers a nice view of the falls.

Berdella, Jan and I took a road trip to see the Springfield Falls in Mercer County today. It was drizzling a little and wet but I thought that just heightened the effect of making the green of the moss and trees more jewel-like. Perfect weather for visiting a waterfalls. More... )

Yesterday I had a busy day - OA in the morning, lunch at Eat-n-Park with the OA ladies, home to get Dave and then we picked up Nancy and went to Jill's visitation and funeral service. Thoughts on the viewing. The funeral home did a good job I suppose in making Jill look like herself but it was hard to connect with the body till I looked at her hands - they had put all her rings on that she was known to wear frequently. One of them was a ring I made for her. Then it was real to me - this was Jill. I felt overcome when I talked to her son - he is the same age as Jules. Afterwards we came home and I took a nap. Later I went out in the back yard and noticed that the sycamores had chosen that day to release their seeds. 2 photos of seeds.  )

After dinner we took Andy for a walk on Oak Hill. They are starting to do a timber cut there and the areas where the trees tops were laying helter-skelter all over was barely recognizable. I would have been lost there. It seemed like all the jumble of tree tops filled my eyes and I couldn't see the little streams, hills and gullies that used to be my frame of reference in those areas. I didn't take any photos of that. But I did get some photos of the snow and paths in other areas where the cutters haven't been yet.

SPAD - getting out of the car and getting ready to bike.

I had a very non-productive day today but a wonderful day! I took off this morning for the bike trail with the big girl nikon camera and the super takumar lens. I really haven't used that lens much after I got it so thought it might be fun to play with for once. 15 more glowy, dreamy and tangled photos here. )

This isn't that rare and you've probably seen something like it before but it just struck me as extra-magical this morning when Berdella and I saw these reflections while walking around Lake Wilhelm. I'm easily amused I guess. Ignore my voice - I wish I could get that to be muted.

snow falling outside my bedroom window just now - some icicles too

I guess we are going to get a big snow fall today and overnight. Lightly falling but steady. I'm wondering what it will be like walking on Oak Hill tomorrow. Deep, and it's supposed to be very cold tomorrow morning too. Hmm... I might just take off my glasses and wear a ski mask - maybe that would be best. Otherwise if I have a scarf over my nose my glasses will fog up. My mind is full of Oak Hill today. Wondering about a path that would take us down over the hill into Franklin. When the city was laid out there was supposed to be a connection street built (Bleakley Ave) but it never was. It still shows up on some maps though and I'd like to see what is really there. Here's a map I played around with today:

oak-hill-sketch-some-paths-internet

The pink line is the street that shows up on some maps but is not really there. The yellow dot is where we were standing when I took photos of the old gravel pit with far hills in the distance. The red dot is the sit-rock overlooking French Creek that I think is scary. The yellow path and green path are just a couple of the ways we have gone as an example of how far we walk. We go a different way each time.

tiny-leaves-5-16-14.3

I think the problem is this tree is starting to die. It will live for now but maybe it's reached the end of it's vitality. We tried to tap it for sap this spring but very little came out. Most the other maples in the yard have big leaves. There is another maple in the yard that is like this one - it's leaves are tiny too. Neither one really put out any flowers this spring. But I hope they can last a while longer - I like them a lot and this one shades the house in the summer.

Rainy day again and getting colder. Dave and Johnny went fishing.

banana-flower-petal-lips
Kathy told me she thinks the banana flower petals look like lips - so this photo happened.

We got up pretty late today cause of the time change. We ate a quick breakfast and then took the bikes down to Palma Sola Park. It's about 2 miles away but a quick trip on a bike. This is Kathy's home away from home and there are always birds and animals to be seen and photographed here. Many more photos HERE )

I had to go in town today to mail something so I got together with David Z. We went for a ride over Bradensburg Hill to Oil City and looked at pretty leaves - then had lunch at the Mosaic. A few more photos from around the yard today - HERE. )
